#VerseLove Day 21, When You Need a Break

Dairy Queen

hot, sticky evening air
sun lingering in the sky
breaking from lassitude

smallest in the stroller
another on his bike
you and i, daughter
chatting about all and nothing

wending the familiar path
to the spot a mile away

where all chose
their favorite
ice cream indulgence,
sat on the curb
to race the drips
to the final lick

the return trek home
as the sun slid to sleep

I too am feeling those childhood memories–that DQ was on the corner not far from where we lived. I love the line “race the drips to the final lick”

Thanks, Kim. It was a mile each way to “our” DQ, and I always insisted on walking there, not driving — to rationalize the indulgence. 🙂 And, for the enjoyment!

We had a DQ down the road from the apartments where I grew up, and this poem you wrote captures that similar memory quite nicely.
“as the sun slid to sleep”
